Picture includes the gas storage tanks in Auckland Park Johannesburg. Gas has yet to play a significant role in the energy makeup of South Africa. The provision of energy has been (and still is) made up of primarily of coal. Political agendas has limited the diversification of our national energy mix. Around 2008, gas experienced a surge as a result of rolling black outs, supposedly driven by a lack of coal. The truth behinds this, is one of poor management of infrastructure and political agendas. Personal belief is that countries should pursue options that are best for its citizens. In other words pursuing services at the least cost to citizens, thus enabling citizens to divert monies to other crucial needs i.e. the well-being and advancement of their families. Thus with regards to energy options, while diversity in the national energy mix is important, options such as natural resources which are abundant, clean and sustainable should be pursued.
