Couple of buildings of the under construction campus for Indian Institute of Management Rohtak can be seen in the photo. In foreground we have some PVC pipes, TMT steel rods and galvanized steel pipes which are being used in huge quantity for this construction. India, unlike many other developing countries, has good industrial base for producing steel, cement and petrochemicals used for PVC production. However, there are huge regional variations. Most of steel plants are in central and eastern India since that's where iron-ore and coal mines are located. Rohtak is situated in the north and these steel rods and pipes are thus transported over 1000 km from their point of manufacture. Even though PVC pipes are produced domestically, India doesn't have much oil reserves. Consequently, most of crude oil that goes into manufacturing petrochemicals needed for PVC is imported from Gulf countries and Africa.
