* This exercise has been undertaken based on learnings from my personal travels / inputs from others. List of most liveable cities in my opinion are: Tokyo Singapore Los Angeles London Pondicherry Characteristics that make a city liveable: Public utilities and communication services – availability and uninterrupted services Stress index, environment and health services Economic development Infrastructure and transport Culture and recreation I currently live in Aurangabad City, Maharashtra, India. The status of this city with respect to the above mentioned criteria is as follows: CHARACTERISTIC RATING (OUT OF 10) STATUS Public utilities and communication services – availability and uninterrupted services 1 Uninterrupted supply of water and electricity throughout the year is a major concern for residents of this city. Further, not all areas have Stress index, environment and health services 6 The city is not more than 25 kms. in diameter and travel is not stressful. Economic activity is moderate and overall life-style is still rural. Even if solid waste disposal is a proble, overall environment may be polluted as compared to the surrounding areas, but it is cleaner and safer as compared to other major cities in India. Economic development 5 The city is an Industrial Hub within the region and also and auto cluster. The city is identified on many Industrial Corridor development projects. Economic activity is moderate. Infrastructure and transport 3 Though road infrastructure has been developed adequately, it is poorly maintained. Public transport is almost non-existent. Culture and recreation 4 On account of being a historical city from a relatively stable and prosperous era of history and being the Tourism Capital of the State, culture is well developed. Efforts to maintain the culture are relatively short. Recreational facilities are also inadequately short as compared to being a major town in the region.
