Part 1: The top 10 cities with the most intense summer urban heat islands (average daily urban-rural temperature differences) over the past 10 years are: Las Vegas (7.3°F), Albuquerque (5.9°F), Denver (4.9°F), Portland (4.8°F), Louisville (4.8°F), Washington, D.C. (4.7°F), Kansas City (4.6°F), Columbus (4.4°F), Minneapolis (4.3°F), and Seattle (4.1°F). Part 2: Hello everyone, my name is Ana and I live in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The temperatures here get really high during the summer months and winter can get cold, with temperatures around zero degrees Celsius. The temperature here is feeling higher every year, even though its average has not increased. We are experiences higher peaks in temperature, with temperatures never before recorded for the city, and that is causing a change in the perception of the inhabitants. The two pictures that I chose are of the city center of my city, which shows a lot of tall buildings, cars, and concrete. There the average temperature is higher than the rest of the city, but during the day the temperature is actually lower because the sun light does not enter the streets. The second photo shows the surroundings of the city, where the density is lower. I could not find any photo of the rural area. Part 3: If I could take part in the decision making process for the city of Porto Alegre, I would propose more green in the city, with more trees in the urban area to help mitigate the heat temperatures. Also I believe that the city need to develop more measures to discourage the use of cars with contribute to a lot of the temperatures peaks. Part 4: The UHI effect is not a concerning policy in my city. Even though the temperature has a visible impact in the population habits there is no policy about it.
