1. Vienna 2. Strasourg 3. Copenhagen 4. Aarhus 5. Krakow Characteristic of liveable city: 1. An exciting history present in the architecture and memory of the city. 2. Rich cultural life with museums, writers, intellectuals etc. 3. An inclusive and protective social welfare state. 4. Multicultural and tolerant. 5. Not to big and alienating. All of these things should in future be based on a sustainable green city with democratic governance and good mobility, but these are not so much criteria for me (yet) as they are fundamentals to every city development. Aarhus: 1. The history is not that exciting but it does have some good historical architecture. And it is creating some exciting contemporary architecture 2. It has some very good museums, but perhaps lacks writers and intellectuals (although we have some very good academics). 3. The welfare state is pretty elaborate and creates a somewhat inclusive, safe, coherent and equal city. 4. It is beginning to become multicultural and tolerant in inner city but some segregation between mainly immigrant suburbs and middle class suburbs. Tolerance is probably high although it has not materialzied in terms of for example very open gay or muslim communities. 5. The size is very small and it could be bigger for my taste (242.000 people). But not more than 400.000.
