General information: The building of the (former) Van Nelle factory is situated in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The factory produced until the year 1995 tea, coffee and tobacco. The idea of architect was to build the factory with next features: light, space and air. The factory is at the moment the historic monument and UNESCO World Heritage site. Features invisible from visible: 1. Function and departments - Function of the building: industrial - Four different building parts refer to departments: tea, coffee, tobacco and office 2. Materials - The building has been made from steel and glass. - Neon lighting during the night / at the moment LED-lighting 3. Working conditions - Daylight for working people but also light shining outwards during night - Space and air - Healthy working conditions 4. Energy - Using grey water for the toilets (visible inside) - Own energy production (in the past) 5. Green surrounding - Connection with the surrounding - Green area outside
