To get an initial understanding, quantitative data from the area should be analysed to see what types of issues are recurring to make residents feel unsafe. Building upon this, I would propose workshops where local residents could give accounts of their experience in the neighbourhood and which of these have made them feel unsafe. It would also be relevant to ask when they have felt safe and consider how the criteria of these events could be applied to all eventualities. For example, they may feel safer when they are within spaces that have continual passer-by traffic, like that of the public square shown in the attached image. By gathering qualitative data it will add a deeper level of understanding than if only quantitative data was addressed. Once a proposal has been worked up based upon the gathered research, this proposal should again be discussed with the residents so they can add their input again. The implementation of this project should continue to involve residents so there can be a continual development of a strategy to keep the neighbourhood safe.
