1. Which are your top livability criteria? In the list below, you can find (in alphabetical order) some of the livability criteria that official surveys use to determine the livability of a city. We want you to select the top-5 criteria that you think contribute the most to a city's livability. Order them with the most important at the top of your list. ANSWER: 1. Safety/ 2. Culture/ 3. Transportation/ 4. Health Care/ 5. Infrastructure 2. Why do we live where we live? Name the place you live and provide 5 reasons why you live there. Those reasons may not be related to the official livability criteria. Order them with the most important at the top of your list. To support your statements you are asked to provide one or more images from your area of residence, that describe the reasons you selected. ANSWER: I am from Brazil and I live in a district called Mooca (Sao Paulo City). The 5 reasons why I live here are: 1) Safety - Unfortunately, in Sao Paulo, the suburb is less secure than the city center. On the other hand, is more expensive to live in the center than in the suburb. Then for me, it was extremely important to balance the neighborhood with the cost of living. The first picture below shows the limits of Sao Paulo City and the second picture shows the neighborhood where I live; 2) Transportation – I live near of the city center so I have access to many transportation options such as subway, train and bus. In the map below it is possible to check the subway lines and the possible future expansion; 3) Recreation possibilities - Here in Mooca it has a lot of options for recreation. It has 2 parks, 1 shopping mall and many restaurants, supermarkets, schools (which in Brazil, most of the public schools are open on the weekends for the kids and their family to play sports and enjoy together); 4) Opportunities - I believe that the most and even the better opportunities to study, find a job and have good private and public services are in the big cities. Because they try to innovate and bring more new ideas from other big cities around the world which benefit the citizens; 5) Neighborhood - This neighborhood has a great combination of residential and store areas. It also has hospitals, universities and it is a very walkable place. Another important fact is that part of my family already lives here. 3. To what extend does your own place of residence fulfill your ideal livability criteria? On a scale from 1-100 rate to what extend your place of residence fulfills your ideal livability criteria (i.e. the top-5 criteria you selected in Question 1). Provide also a general livability score for your city, using the same scale (1-100). ANSWER: Neighborhood (Mooca): Safety 70/100 Culture 55/100 Transportation 76/100 Health Care 60/100 Infrastructure 67/100 Sao Paulo City: Safety 58/100 Culture 50/100 Transportation 74/100 Health Care 55/100 Infrastructure 60/100 4. What would you change? Imagine that you were the mayor of your place of residence. Which would be the first measure you would take to improve livability? I would create more job opportunities. Currently, the better jobs are in the center and south of the city and this fact has created a migration process. So, to keep and attract the young people, especially the ones who had born and graduated here, it is needed to bring the companies to the east of the city. This also it will improve the life quality because the people who live here will spend less time commute to work. ANSWER: I would create more job opportunities. ANSWER:Paris (France)/ Lisbon (Portugal)/ Rome (Italy): 1)Culture; 2)Infrastructure; 3)Recreation possibilities; 4)Transportation; 5)Security. A brief explanation for my choices: What makes me think in those cities it was all the historical past and facts that happened and how it changed and affected my own country. I believe that all those cities have a great infrastructure, transportation and security because of the experience and investments which were made. While the recreation possibilities are almost the consequences. Furthermore, Brazil has much to learn from other countries.
