CASE: New York City Department of Sanitation, Trash Collection Network SOURCE: http://www1.nyc.gov/nyc-resources/service/2320/recycling-or-trash-collection-schedule The Trash Collection Network of the City of New York is very sensitive as there is no daily service. This means that trash must be disposed following more strict rules than in other cities. The main rule is that there are very specific times and days when trash has to be taken out, so that the sanitation truck can pick it up. In the area of the photography, trash is collected on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. In this neighbourhood (Hamilton Heights, Harlem) trash is taken out in the early morning period (from 6 am to 8 am). Specifically, it is a Friday, which is the only day when recycling is collected. As it can be appreciated, it is mandatory that recycling is disposed in big transparent plastic bags. The importance of this infrastructure is crucial for the cleanliness of the city, since the accumulation of trash for consecutive days, as it is the case of the weekends, may lead to unhealthy situations, with trash being piled up in the basements of the buildings. This leads to the problem that basements are not designed properly to accommodate this amount of trash. Similarly, sidewalks are sometimes completely collapsed with the trash disposed on them, what makes difficult for citizens to walk along the street.
