A few of the most important stocks and flows in my city: -people (this could be viewed more as a stock rather than a flow): -students: Sheffield is home to two large UK universities and they attract plenty of students from both the UK and abroad. The city is quite safe and the housing prices are not so high so it is affordable and attractive for students. Information regarding the number of students, where they choose to live and in what activities around the city they indulge could improve both housing development and urban planning of specific areas and, in addition to that, this could lead to an increase in the safety level around the streets. -immigrants: some of the immigrants are university students and others are people looking for better jobs, better opportunities to save money. The second biggest shopping area in England is situated at the outskirts of the city so there are plenty of job opportunities that attract people to the city. -commuters and residents: the commuters could represent the flow and the residents the stocks. Having data regarding this matter could improve public transportation development as well as better urban planning in the areas that are heavily used. -food (it is a flow at the moment): plenty of food is imported to Sheffield supermarkets, some from within the country (especially meat, eggs, bread) and some from other regions around the globe (mainly fruits and vegetables). Sheffield has land that can be used for growing food: some people do it, but a really low percentage of the land is used (compared with the available land that can be used). Data about how much food and what types of food are imported is essential in this case, as I firmly believe it would help with the development of an urban farming system that would be much more sustainable and even profitable for the local economy. -capital: in the past decade, businesses have started to flourish around the city. Varying from restaurant to IT companies and medical clinics, this is one of the main aspects that continuously change the appearance of the city and has a direct impact on the livability, economy and social scenery of Sheffield. Information on what people tend to invest their money in, study cases about business growth and what would benefit the region in relation to the national markets could lead to an improvement in how businesses are developed and how the economy is prospering at a local level and at a national level as well, as Sheffield is one of the biggest cities in the UK (both in terms of population and surface). *the images shows office buildings in a former dilapidated area along River Don.
