FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"
Uploaded on 2017-06-17 by Christopher Ohara
Identify and present two "invisible information" that can be extracted out of the visible information of this photo. 1) High traffic value due to visible high density of building and population 2) High UHI Select one of your choices from the previous question and describe how this invisible information can become knowledge and contribute to the planning of a more livable urban space. 1) This invisible information could be considered when making optimizing the design of other aspects in society. For instance, many people commute in Los Angeles, on approximately the same schedule. Unfortunately, this causes peak traffic times, whether it be on the freeways or side streets, to occur from 7:00am-11:00am and 4:00pm-8:00pm. This peak traffic can cause commuters to sit in traffic for hours to go a short distance (sometimes over an hour to go 10km). The public transportation (subways, buses) in Los Angeles are very unreliable as well, so they are not often considered by individuals who have a strict, inflexible schedule. I would propose an overhaul to the professional standard timelines Los Angeles, as if start and finish times for work and university classes was different, it would reduce the amount of traffic. Perhaps allowing for there to be some schools that can teach students during the middle of the night. (This would also save energy since less energy is needed during the nighttime). Likewise, due to international business, some individuals working throughout the night would then be active at the same time as South East Asia and China. This could also have some positive results.
