1. -- 2. Main UHI effects in my area: According to https://www.stadtklima-stuttgart.de/index.php?klima_waermeinsel, the temperature differences between the city of Stuttgart and rural areas comprise up to more than 10° Celsius regarding the average temperature in a year. The pictures show an impression down on the city of Stuttgart (on the left) and one of rural areas around Stuttgart (on the right). The main reasons for the UHI effect in Stuttgart are the many surfaces that are sealed and covered by buldings, air pollutants (esp. because of the dense traffic with combustion vehicles) as well as man-made heat sources. 3. Measures for improvement: I would propose to reduce sealed surface areas (e. g. streets) by replacing parts of the streets, esp. between the streets and the pedestrian path), by green areas with grass and trees (very important as I could observe in comparison with Barcelona), as well as fountains and little watercourses. Furthermore would I foster buildings that do not cover so much ground, and leave more space between new buildings. But the most important measure would be to reduce the emissions from car traffic. An option could be to ban diesel and petrol cars to a certain degree and to foster electric mobility in the city. 4. The most important political steps that support the reduction of the UHI effect in Stuttgart might be seen in the Luftreinhalteplan which in particular is targeted at reducing fine dust and nitrogen oxide (see: https://rp.baden-wuerttemberg.de/rps/Seiten/aktuellemeldung.aspx?rid=133).
