1. Which are your top livability criteria? 1. Job Opportunities 2. Housing 3. Safety 4. Transportation 5. Infrastructure 2. Why do we live where we live? My name is Adeoye Ademitilewa. I am a graduate and I live with my parents in Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria. They are originally from Southern Yoruba states, my father relocated to Lagos after his education and my mother joined him after their marriage. This was as a result of: 1. Job opportunities:- Due to the urbanization of Lagos, there were a lot of job opportunities, both public and private. 2. Standard and cost of living:- although Lagos was experiencing urbanization, food, clothing and other necessities were still available. 3. Housing:- housing in the suburbs although not great initially, was relatively affordable at the time. They could afford to buy their own land and build their home. 4. Education:- there are a lot of good schools in Ikeja and around Lagos, hence my siblings and I did not need to go far to study. 5. Safety:- safety is important for raising a family. 3. To what extend does your own place of residence fulfill your ideal livability criteria? 3a. On a scale from 1-100 rate to what extend your place of residence fulfills your ideal livability criteria (i.e. the top-5 criteria you selected in Question 1). 1. Job Opportunities -25 (due to population explosion) 2. Housing - 35 3. Safety - 75 4. Transportation - 40 5. Infrastructure – 85 3b. Provide also a general livability score for your city, using the same scale (1-100). 55 / 100 4. What would you change? In Lagos, there are many luxurious service apartments and homes, but these cannot be afforded by the majority of the people. If I were the governor of my state, I would develop schemes to focus on affordable housing, development of better transport systems and road networks in order to reduce the terrible traffic congestion, and creation of job opportunities for the youth. I would also develop policies to control population growth, both by birth and immigration. However, the development of Lagos cannot be isolated. The population is constantly increasing due to immigration from the rural parts of Nigeria and from abroad. This is because of the opportunities that are available here, compared to the rural parts. The increase in the livability of Lagos state will only attract more population. Hence, in the larger scheme of things, I think it is important to develop other parts of Nigeria in order to spread out the population and reduce pressure on the available infrastructure. 5. Prague, Czech Republic 1. Culture. 2. High quality of life. 3. Climate. 4. Good transport infrastructure. 5. Education/architecture. Copenhagen, Denmark 1. High quality of life. 2. Culture. 3.
