Module 10 - Compulsory Exercise 6 1. Think and comment on an existing Citizen Design Science project in urban design and planning from your area or country. Urban renewal is still at work in Boston and the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) is trying to change the mindset of Bostonians about the infamous actions that had been done during mid 20th century. The BRA recently held a series of community meetings to tell residents about its plans and wants to educate residents about urban renewal and why the mistakes of the past could never be made again. At the same time, people are asked about their opinions and their personal experiences. BRA has held several round of public workshops to ask ideas for updating the goals of urban renewal plan areas. Also, they have gone beyond public meetings. They have updated the website, encourage for more feedbacks and give much more comprehensive information on the current plan areas. 1. Think and comment on the following example: Habitats of a certain neighborhood don’t feel safe when they walk in their neighborhood in the evening and during the night. You are working for the local government and want to solve this problem through improvement of the public spaces. How would you start-up a Citizen Design Science project? * I believe people are tired of mundane Town Hall-style meetings I would combine online engagement with digital mapping so that an individual user can conduct a safety audit, pin places where he/she feels unsafe or has faced any form of harassment. Knowing that not all stakeholders who should be a part of the important conversation would be able to attend an in-person session, I would use social media like live tweeter to increase participation, make information on the public sessions more accessible, and increase the geographic reach of the review.
