Module 6 - compulsory Exercise: energy flows The Sankey Diagram - creating policy to reduce CO2 emissions In this exercise, we would like to ask you what you would do to reduce the CO2 emissions in your country. Please let us know: 1. What are the dominant fossil fuels used in your country? Use www.iea.org/sankey to discover it (Hint: e aware of the flow of the energy in the Sankey diagram. Sometimes a part of the production of energy goes to the export of a country. Exported energy won't be consumed by your country itself). Ans:Petroleum, natural gas, hydro, coal, biomas 2. Where are the dominant fossil fuels mainly used for in your country? (e.g. transport, industry, non-energy use etc.) Ans: Transportation, industry. 3. It is your task to create a new policy in order to improve the environmental friendly and sustainable sources and consumption of energy of your country. How would you do that? Think of how you can improve the sources and the consumption of energy. Ans: Firstly, planned growth. Large quantity of illegal migrants brought in, particularly during elections, is causing unexpected population growth and social instability. A few wicked proteges of the rich in Malaysia have been causing much skewed social development, injustice including inhumanity, in the name of power fights or political agenda upholding. Unlimited development without long term planning causing much unwanted side effects. These two reasons induce drastic change in landscape, traffic, microclimate, energy and fossil fuel consumptions etc. To improve the situation, the government needs to know what they are doing. A proper guidance on how to develop a sustainable city (e.g. some royal town sheds in this country), or a latest term- livable city, is a must so that the authorities do not just grasp on the surface interpretation of the concept but really know what is needed to better off the quality of life. In addition, the few wicked proteges of the rich here must be punished.
