In Geneva, we can see the same phenomenon as in US cities. During last year summer, we recorded 34°c in the center of the city. At the same time, we recorded 31°c in the rural area near Geneva. The first photo is the cityview and the second (which will follow) is the campaign view. The main difference come from building’s disposition. In the city, we have big buildings with street canyons, street canyons and cubes, courtyard city block and complex urban configuration. In summer we often have ozone peaks due to heat. Many people suffer from dehydration. In contrary to rural area where we find less buildings with a lot of villas. There is less place for reflection. Sometimes we observe more ozone in rural areas than in the center for the city due to air flows. I would propose some measures like increasing green spaces (parkas, trees, etc.) which provide humidity and “fresher” temperature. I would propose to centralized the refreshing system and put the exhaust on roof instead of façades. We don’t have a lot of air conditioner but we tend to have more in recent years. Another measure would be to paint roofs with color that increase the albedo, thus roofs won’t keep too much energy. I don’t know those policies.
