Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area? This is about my town Jaffna in Sri Lanka Throughout the month of March daytime temperatures will generally reach highs of around 35°C that's about 95°F. At night the average minimum temperature drops down to around 24°C, that's 75°F. In recent times the highest recorded temperature in March has been 41°C that's 105°F, with the lowest recorded temperature 14°C, about 58°F. http://www.myweather2.com/City-Town/Sri-Lanka/Jaffna/climate-profile.aspx this is about capital city of Sri Lanka - Colombo Throughout the month of March daytime temperatures will generally reach highs of around 30°C that's about 87°F. In recent times the highest recorded temperature in March has been 38°C that's 101°F, with the lowest recorded temperature 8°C, about 46°F. http://www.myweather2.com/City-Town/Sri-Lanka/Colombo/climate-profile.aspx I couldn’t find the temperature record for our village and the town 3. Which are the measures you would propose? Our early village center’s had public place (temple or market), water body and lot of trees around area. Even this type places could be seen nowadays too. But present set up of village center or town neglecting the traditional concepts of water body and trees. Because of land demand in the city area with the political influences local authority filling the water bodies or abandon the water body. Try to follow the ancestor’s concept to make balance in the city. Maintain the proportion of city elements such as solid, water, open space, green space etc. 4. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area? Really no one is not speaking about UHI in our area. Because of learning about urban design course I heard about it. Our local newspapers spoke about global warming in broader sense. 12 years before we had single lane road with trees either side of road but forces cut the trees for the security reasons (to avoid the road side mines attach). After end of war local authority taking initiative to plant trees wherever possible in the road side. Need to create at least one water body in the village to collect rainwater as well as maintain water as element.
