1. Imagine that you have set up a project wherein you would like to make use of Citizen Design Science. Which guidelines are important in creating your own Citizen Design Science project? ** Few years ago, I participate to a competition for a small city in the Netherlands and I did use the method Citizen Design Science. The task was to find a solution for the city canter, where many shops were empty and in a state of abandon. What I did, as a urban designer, was to study the city and the area around. See the strengths and weaknesses of the location and understand why the shops were empty. After this I went to the village, took pictures and talk to people. I discussed with them about the city, what they wish to see in the future and how would they try to solve this issue. From of their answer I started research and a come up with a possible redevelopment strategy. In this specific case, corporations and rent were too “strong” and small shops couldn’t survive. The citizen and the community didn’t feel the possess of city. Solutions such as donating 1 euro and helping a new shop owner for the first mouths or temporary shops etc could have help the inhabitants to get back the city. In summary, my guidelines would be: - Analysis of the area - Understanding the issue - Visiting the place - Talking to people and understand their opinion and related social issues - Putting all the information in the pot and search for a specific solution - As last step, which I couldn’t do since it was a competition, discuss again with the citizens about the plan - Apply p.s.
