In Doha, Qatar, the three most important stocks and flows would be the following, 1. People. With almost 90% of the country's 2.67 million people being migrant workers from all over the world, primarily, South Asia, People become the most important 'flow' factor. Based on the gender, age, race, education level etc. the balance of society is affected. Currently, the ratio of women to men in the country is highly skewed at 323:1000. This is primarily because majority of the working population are male unskilled laborers employed in the construction sector. Since permanent residency is not possible in the country, all expatriate workers must leave the country at the end of their employment. The quality and mix of people arriving and residing in the country therefore is key to the development of the nation in the right direction. 2. Construction Materials Currently, Qatar is experiencing a construction boom as a precursor to the FIFA World Football Championship in 2022. Constructions of Stadiums, Infrastructure, hotels, offices, residences are all running parallelly. Qatar, imports most of its building materials from the rest of the world. With only one land border, with Saudi Arabia, most of the materials arrive by sea. Due to the climate of the region and the unavailability of all desired materials for the required type of construction, most of the materials are imported from around the world. Unless more traditional an vernacular methods of construction are readopted, this will continue to be the case. 3. Land Despite being a peninsular nation, the city of Doha has been continuously reclaiming land from the sea inorder to make room for its growing population. Instead of moving inwards, the city has been reclaiming land since the 1970s when it first defined the coastline and created the ‘West Bay’ Areas. Over the last 40 years, there have been several developments along the coast and land has been reclaimed for most of them. The Pearl-Qatar, Lusail City or Hamad International Airport, they all sit on reclaimed land. While this has been a favored mode of operation, this also has several environmental repercussions.
