Photo is from: http://www.win6village.org/ This is a proposed development project in Santa Clara, which was community-led. The community fought for a design for land that included a working farm. This project has not yet broken ground, but hte evelopers are engaging the community through PlaceMaking, and have held a series a meetings for envisioning. Project for Public Spaces (http://www.pps.org/) is the organization that is leadign the community engagement. This seems to support wider community involvement. Some cities in the Bay Area have even engaged their citizens through the budget planning process through games. There are also many other Citizen Science projects that are active - for example, counting butterflies, counting birds, counting mushrooms, etc - involved in helping understand the local flora and fauna and the changes they are going though. There are still other projects engaging people in water quality monitoring, which is a way to educate the public about where their water comes from as well as taking quality measurements.
