For this exercise, I have chosen two daily routes, and for each route, the two most viable modes of transportation. The first route is from Home to our children’s School by either car or bike. The preferred mode of transportation is by car as it is the most convenient. The option to go by bike, although slightly shorter in distance and more sustainable, requires more physical effort to bike with three young children. Also, comfort is dependent on weather conditions, where here it is often quite cold or raining. Another option, which we did not include in the table, was to go by bus, however, the route was not direct, involved long walking distances and travelling time was three times as long. The second route is from Home to the City of the Hague, where I drop off my wife to take the train to work in the neighbouring city of Rotterdam. The preferred mode of transportation again is by car, which is more convenient for her and requires less time. The second mode, by public transportation, which I am not actually involved in but have included to illustrate how much longer travel to the train station would take – an additional 10 minutes. The decision on which mode to be taken is fluid on a day-to-day basis, as it largely depends on the schedules of the whole family. Route Transportation Mode Time Distance Home to School Car 9 minutes 3.6 km Bike 10 minutes 3.3 km Home to City Car 16 minutes 10 km Public Transport 26 minutes 10 km Bus 14 min 9 km Walk 12 min 1 km
