Think and comment on the following example: Habitats of a certain neighborhood don’t feel safe when they walk in their neighborhood in the evening and during the night. You are working for the local government and want to solve this problem through improvement of the public spaces. How would you start-up a Citizen Design Science project? * The walled city areas and the old neighborhoods in the city of Amritsar do not feel safe primarily because of the absence of streetlights and activity spaces. The situation can be improved by involving local residents. 1. Visual Survey and Opinion Survey can help in identifying the areas/streets that need immediate attention. 2. Focus group discussions with the Residents Welfare Association Members can enable identification of feasible measures that can be adopted to improve the situation. 3. Streetwise/Household Cluster wise especially the young people can be involved to propose and design the activity spaces in collaboration with the ULBs (urban local bodies) for rejuvenation of street squares/dead end/vacant plots etc. 4. Dilapidated Buildings may be replaced with parks/tot lots/spaces for local vendors etc. so that the neighborhood remains active and alive even after sunset thus giving a feeling of safety and security and providing spaces for relaxation, recreation and rejuvenation to all members of the community.
