I live in New York City and chosen picture was taken in the area of Union Square and New York University in Manhattan. By looking at the picture you can identify all three examples of Stock and Flow I'm going to share my findings, ideas and opinions on: Waste, People and Information. What is WASTE? From the view of a New Yorker it is trashbags along the streets, rat in a Subway carrying a water bottle in front of you, overfilled trashcans on every corner... But what is waste from the global view? It is "a temporary expression that exists in times and places of surplus, but really in times and places of scarcity or in sustainable communities and societies" - as it is said in the "Information Cities" book by Gerhard Schmitt, and I completely agree with this opinion. Waste in the future city is just a temporary appearance of the material that is going to be used as a construction material, heating or energy resource. Waste is not appreciated by the community (yet) because we didn't learn good enough all the goals of using and reusing it for our own benefit. Progress in science has developed ways of recycling and treating waste for a good use and this is the knowledge that is going to be applied to the concept of Future Cities for economical and ecological reasons. Products get imported from other places, get used and become trash and waste in NYC, and then all the waste leaves the city what makes it Dynamic process (Flow). But in the future this aspect will become Static (Stock) by not leaving the city, but getting used and re-used as, again, constructional or energy material. These principle will lead to sustainable and resilient city. There is plenty of waste in New York and this aspect follows another Stock/Flow seen in New York: PEOPLE. People can appear in the overall picture of a city in both ways - as a damaging agent or it also can get a factor for a development of the city and future city. Negative influence on the city people can have by destroying its environmental surroundings that leads to economical, health and social problems. Positive influence is lead by the Flows of tourists and people from different parts of the country or of the world. Attracting more and more people city also needs to provide Flow of new inhabitants with food, houses, jobs, that lead to expanding of the city physically. Also, city gets expanded in INFORMATIONAL way by people that carry a baggage of knowledge, ideas, culture, background and experience with them. New York was, is and will be a city of immigrants. New York is made by and for immigrants and this is one of the most appreciated parts of it. Students and professors come to New York to work in a collaborative way to get the most of the knowledge to use it for developing and improvement in the future. In this way, the Flow of People in the Megalopolis like NYC is followed by the other aspect like INFORMATION.
