I have chosen my regular commute from home to work in Dublin, Ireland a distance of 4.5km between suburban areas. By bicycle Duration: 15 minutes This is my usual mode of transport. The journey nearly always takes the same time. Dublin’s climate is mild and temperate and suited to cycling. Heavy traffic can occasionally be intimidating but Dublin standards it’s relatively easy. Part of the route is on unsegregated, on-road bicycle paths of generally poor quality. They are frequently blocked by parked cars. Occasional bad weather doesn’t bother me: just dress appropriately. This is by far the quickest, cheapest, most dependable and convenient mode between these locations. By car Duration: estimated between 10 minutes and 40 minutes I have only done this a few times. Very undependable because of traffic congestion and limited parking in my workplace. By bus Duration: 50 minutes There is no direct public transport provision. Taking bus would entail getting a bus to the city centre and another from the city to my workplace, a significant detour. I have never attempted this. Dublin generally lacks public transport connections between suburban areas: everything goes via the congested city centre. I estimate this would cost about €5 per day. Walking: 50 minutes I have tried this a couple of times. About one third of the walk is pleasant, along a wide, tree-lined avenue. The rest is grim: little of interest on the route and very poor pedestrian facilities: pedestrian crossings are either not provided or entail very long waiting times.
