I found a lot of scientific papers about UHI in Greece and more specifically in Thessaloniki. The urban hat island in Thesslaloniki was beaing measured for one year (2008-2009). It was proved that UHi is much stronger during night and during the warm months of the year. The observations showed maximum range of 2-4 Celcious degrees and 1-3 Celcious degrees during warm and winter months respectively. Maximum values are after sunset and lowest during sun peak hours. The intesity of UHI decreases importantly when the velocity of the wind is more than 4 m/s. The center of the city exhibits the highest discomfort and wet buble globe temperature values. It also has a bad effecti on thermal comfort (Giannaros, 2012). The center of Thessaloniki is characterized by the lack of open green places and parks and the traffic conjestion. Most of the building have around 5-7 flours, which is considered much high for Greece and the streets are narrow. On the other hand, in an area just outside of the center, there are plenty more trees all across the road. Traffic is much less and the building are one far from the other and up to 3 floors. This huge difference between the above characteristics are significant for the creation of UHI. I would propose more open public places. Trees an all streets and light colours in the majority of the buildings. Also i would suggest use of blower fans on streets which are narrow and with high buildings. Usage of solar machines for heat is helpful too. In July 2016 it was decided the beginning of a new programe called <> (ASTI). It is conducted by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and will bring all the information which is essential for creating policies against UHI in Thessaloniki. Another project that is already finished is the enviromental upgrade of a neighborhood in thessaloniki with blower fans, trees, pedestrian roads and fountains. in this area both air circulation and temperature are now much lower combared to the pre-project area. In this articular area the temperature used to be 4 degrees higher than the rest of the city center and many people choose to spend their evening during hot summer days there.
