1. Where would you measure the maximum UHI intensity? I would mesure the maximum heat island magnitude in the center of the city, in the square in front of the basilica. Is a place with no vegetation, surrounded by buildings and with direct solar light. I would take another mesure from the rural area that surrounds the city. I have chosen "La Hoya", a rural hamlet near to elche, a countryside area. There i would mesure the minimunm temperature of the city. The diference will be the maximum heat island temperature. 2. When (at what time of the day) is the UHI intensity at its maximum? I will do the two measures simultaneously with the weather stations in the city linked to both places. The measurements will be made during nighttime for obtaining the maximum heat island magnitude. 3. How should you set-up the sensor? The sensor should be located, as the video lectures say, about 1,5-2 meters above the surface and away from buildings. But in this case, as i said, i will do the two measures with the weather stations in the city linked to both places. I think this will give me a more precise magnitude, due to the quality of the stations, and the fact that the measure is done at the same time in both places. 4. How big is the temperature difference between where you measured the maximum urban temperature (location A) and the reference location (location B)? Diference = 30 degrees (Elche, Basilica Square) - 24 degrees (La Hoya) = 6 degrees. 5. Can you explain the difference? a) What influence does the weather have on the UHI magnitude? (e.g. season, the wind, clouds etc.) The sky is clear, but the relative strong winds reduce a lot the heat island effect. b) What influence do the immediate surroundings of the places where the measurements were taken have? The the building materials of the center of the city (stone) have a higher heat capacity than rural materials such as (grass and soil). The centre of the city is surrounded by buildings and the heat is released more difficultly. 6. Can you elaborate on a number of interventions against the UHI in your city, which are carried out by different actors? In case you cannot find interventions to prevent UHI in your city, can you think of possible interventions? At the moment, there are no interventions to prevent UHI in Elche, but some possible interventions could be: - Planting trees in the center of the city: the city has a lot of vegetation, but this square doesn´t has. Planting some trees could reduce the heat island effect. - Green walls or green roofs, for the same purpose. - Putting ground materials with less heat capacity: more grass and wood instead of stone and asphalt could be a solution.
