MODULE 10 - COMPULSORY EXERCISE: "With Citizen Design Science a new component has been added to the traditional urban planning and design. CDS creates a new way of public participation and bottom-up planning. It adds the strength of thousands of citizens in terms of observation, human cognition, experience and local knowledge into a scientific network". Describe your own idea for a Citizen Design Science project: Collecting data of urban vegetation in your neighborhood Residents of each neighborhood in SF are asked to document, identify and update the vegetation around their residences or along their daily walks. The database is accessible by a public app for free, supported by the municipal free wifi and sponsored by the local internet provider. It is made user friendly for (almost) all ages, you can fill out a table about certain characteristics and features of the plant, geolocate it and upload pictures. Others can verify the plant via its coordinates, add more data, or correct, with the possibility to always go back to the previous option. The idea behind is to make citizens aware of their surrounding vegetation. To be able to go to a specific plant that you see on the database map (photo: California poppy on Twin Peaks), to create a walk depending on specific parameters that you set.
