San Jose is in the heart of Silicon Valley. Some of stocks and flows for this city are: - engineering talent: this is the population of people available and willing to take on engineering or high-tech jobs in the Valley. Companies are in competition with each other for the talent pool in order to keep up innovation rates. In addition people may be drawn to other opportunities outside the Valley. - housing: this is the stock of available housing available for purchase or rent. Housing prices in the Valley have been rising precipitously as demand cannot keep up with supply. - farmland: this is the amount of available farmland available within the city limits and surrounding hinterlands. Ways these can be used for the benefit of your community are: - as businesses look for ways to benefit their communities to keep their "license to operate", and as employees also seek more purpose business can serve a good force in the community by encouraging employees to volunteer in the community, especially skills-based volunteering to aid community efforts. - as housing demand skyrockets, building codes hopefully can be changed to allow for more affordable housing, as well as more sustainable/efficient buildings, perhaps adhering to standards such as LEED or Living Building - San Jose had an agricultural past, one with rich farmland and benign climates. However, as industry progressed, much of this farmland was paved over. With new techniques in land regeneration, this land can be repaired. In addition, with trends on people desiring more local and fresh produce, urban agriculture is beginning to "take seed". Picture is of "Singing Frog Farms" and is NOT taken by me. The instructions for this exercise say that the picture is optional, yet on story submission, this field is mandatory, so I have included a random picture of a farm that uses regenerative techniques.
