As mentioned in the module, stocks & flows are quintessential towards the survival of a city. For Kingston Jamaica, it is water, food and density. In Kingston, we rely on water for the survival of our daily lives, without it, most operations would come to a halt, especially in the medical, manufacturing and tourism fields. We rely on rainfall to replenish our water supplies and dams for potable water. sometimes, due to lack of rainfall, we have faced massive drought from time to time. Therefore, people have installed water tanks on their roofs (as shown in the first image, taken by me) for water collection. Food is also very important, without it, we would not survive. with the continuous growth in our population in Kingston. food is vital to our way of life. Most food production in Jamaica is made in rural parishes and farmers would drive down every weekend at Downtown Kingston Market to sell their produce to the masses (second image-source: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Za7ABbrxx00/Til4scb4NkI/AAAAAAAAAsg/ZEabLA1r5kk/s1600/07162011256.jpg). Due to long distance in travelling and rise in gas prices, more persons are buying produce from local farmers who grow in the city and in the mountain area close to the city. Nevertheless, we still have an issue when it comes to imported food, a good percentage of our food in Kingston are from other countries especially garlic. Another important stock is density. With the increase in population, it has become important to supply housing. However due to the lack of land, density is essential in determining how people will live. In different parts of Kingston, there are different types, you have small floor-to-area ration apartments within the main city that are located relatively close to various uses and public transportation and you have the suburban spatial areas, especially in places like Portmore, (as shown in the third image- source:http://jamaica-gleaner.com/sites/default/files/styles/jg_article_image/public/article_images/2015/01/11/caymanashighwayd20150110jb.jpg?itok=djpC1iXG) Residents in Portmore rely heavily on vehicles to go to diverse places and to work in Kingston. That can have a negative impact, not just on the cost of gas and toll to cross into the city, but also on the environment due to greenhouse gas emissions from cars.
