Riccardo Brini, Bologna, Italy: Students, tourists and food Speaking of the city of Bologna, in Italy, the first example of a stock and flow that comes to mind is related to the people, in detail two different situations: students and tourists. Another example rather more related to the subject, are the food products that depart from the countryside to the whole world. then referring in the first instance to the concept of student, I have to anticipate that Bologna is home to one of the largest Italian universities (more than 70 thousand subscribers) and the oldest university in the world (1088 BC). It is considered the university city par excellence, and the flow of students can not be ignored. Following a single element we can diversify into two types: the student from another town and the inhabitant. The first is an incoming stream, then a "fixed" element over the years of study and then can stay that way, working in the city, or go back to being a flow going away. The second type of student, as an element remains fixed, a stock (even if of different kinds, from compulsory school student, to University) and thereafter can determine his choices as mentioned above. Tourists, of course, represent an almost continuous flow, no "stock" if we compare the duration of the visit to a year or even a month on average; They arrive and depart. Bologna, as all of Emilia Romagna, is renowned worldwide for its food and the quality of its agricultural products. These represent a definitely also economic resource (which then generates an even flow of capital) that can be seen as a stock and flow of the product itself: the agricultural land can be united to the libraries, are fixed, while the products that are exported are definitely of outflows. The flow of students has greatly influenced the city from different points of view and continue to do so given the growing number of subscribers and the will to create new areas dedicated to students and infrastructure: this will then create new areas also equipped with public services where you will be predicting density and permanence of students not underestimating the residents; as well as from an economic point of view, the real estate market can only receive a further boost. It is true, however, that this flow, so high when you consider that turns out to be 1/6 of the total population, will also lead to problems in services as secure transport services, or else to a number of persons exceeding a lot the inhabitants can only reflected on "costs" (taxes, etc.) of the population itself. Thanks to low cost flights Bologna in recent years is reducing the GAP with other most famous Italian cities regarding tourism: this stream will surely bring benefits and economic benefits to the sector's activities as well as to investments of events, exhibitions, transport will also benefit to the entire city (as an external example, think of a city such as Hannover, the size of Bologna, thanks to an event like the Expo 2000, in itself not a success, it has benefited and still benefits, of a comprehensive and modern transport service). Regarding the flow of food and agricultural products the most banal speech would seem to be the economic and employment; must be considered, however, as to be able to maintain and increase production based on demand also saw the land consumption increases and segmentation so the agricultural areas. The growing interest in this topic led to the creation of FICO, a large park on the food and nutrition that will represent the city the first world-wide appeal. ps: image is about the Engineer Historical Building, tha day of final presentation and degree, the perfect image of students flow.
