2- The Pelotas' climate is subtropical humid and the annual average temperature is of 17 degrees. The city is flatty, with low altitude and close to Lagoa dos Patos, the largest lagoon in South America. The rural area of the city has hills covered with pasture, named known as "coxilhas", and ususally there is a difference between the temperature of the city and the countryside. The effects of UHI can be felt through the higher temperature in downtown than the mild climate of the rural area. 3- If I could, I would encourage people to move on foot, by bicycle or bus. For this, I would invest in public transportation, safety, traffic education and in urban afforestation and lighting. 4- Unfortunately there are no public policies that act against the UHI generators. On the contrary, I see that the reverse thinking is getting stronger. In recent years, several condominiums have been approved and built in important suburban areas where the local landscape used to predominate.
