The downtown of Quebec city has higher temperatures than in rural of Quebec city. In summer, the difference of temperature can reach 6°C and in winter, they can reach 12 °C. The natural surface cover explains a part of the spatial variability of the temperature of the air in an urban territory. There is less trees and grass in the downtown than in the rural area, so that explain the higher temperatures in the urban area. EXERCICE 3: Which are the measures you would propose? I would propose to have more trees in the city, more parks and green areas and also I would encourage the owners of building to have green roofs. Urban agriculture on roofs or urban gardens are a great solutions to reduce the UHI effects. EXERCICE 4: Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area? The city of Quebec is not doing a lot of effort concerning UHI but there is more urban garden in the city than 10 years ago. They are also trying to put more trees along some streets in UHI area.
