Step 1: List the five most liveable cities that you know, based on your own experience and judgment, placing the most liveable city at the top of the list. 1.San Francisco 2.Paris 3.Nairobi 4.Kampala 5.Zurich Step 2: Describe in your own words five characteristics that according to your opinion make a city liveable. Order them placing the most important at the top of the list. * 1.Safety and security 2.Affordable housing 3.Efficient public transport system 4.Diversity of international languages spoken i.e English, French & German 5.Hospitable citizens Step 3: Describe the status of your own city in terms of the five characteristics that you listed above. Propose how your city should/could be transformed in relation to these characteristics in order to be more sustainable. My city Kampala in relation to the characteristics mentioned above: 1.Safety and security – there is armed police within a 8km radius. The city needs to invest in low maintenance neighbourhood lighting to mitigate the dark streets and neighbourhoods 2.Affordable housing – there is a variety of housing options depending on your income. The government needs to fill the void of low cost housing since the private sector is mainly focused on the middle to high income earners. 3.Efficient public transport system – transport system is chaotic with taxis, buses, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians all fighting for right of way. There is need to develop a city transport masterplan that will create dedicated corridors for MRT, BRT and NMT 4.Diversity of international languages spoken i.e English, French & German – English is widely spoken and it is the country’s official language. The government needs to make teaching of international languages in schools a MUST and not optional 5.Hospitable citizens – the people are very friendly and always greet you with a smile. The government needs to support small scale hospitality industries as opposed to only focusing on the upscale hospitality industries.
