Most liveable cities: 1. Santiago, Chile 2. Buenos Aires, Argentina 3. Rome, Italy 4. Barcelona, Spain 5. São Paulo, Brazil Characteristics that make a city liveable: 1. Streets’ vitality and security (“Eyes on the street”) 2. Public open spaces number and quality, especially natural features 3. Urban mobility, focused on pedestrians, cyclists and public transportation 4. Public services quality (education, healthcare…) 5. Environmental and living conditions (pollution, environmental protection, pace of life…) João Pessoa, as most of Brazilian cities, has lots of issues when it comes to security, urban mobility, public services, environmental protection and living conditions, but if compared to others capitals, as Recife, Fortaleza, Salvador, Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo, it’s so much more liveable. Despite its urban sprawl, it’s still a small city, so urban mobility is not yet a huge problem as in other capitals because of its shorter distances. Security also remains higher than other capitals, even though crime rates are still rising. And living conditions are better because of its lower pollution levels, lower costs of living and less stressful pace of life and. But, environmental protection and the number and quality of public open spaces still not as good as other Brazilian cities. So, to become more liveable and sustainable, João Pessoa needs to invest more on public transportation and urban mobility, mixed use neighborhoods (more “eyes on the street”), public services and, especially, environmental protection and public open spaces.
