Step 1: 1. Vienna, Austria 2. Auckland, New Zealand 3. Zurich, Switzerland 4. Geneva, Switzerland 5. Copenhagen, Denmark Step 2: 1. Transportation 2. Medical care 3. Environmental Impact of the city 4. Green spaces 5. Business conditions Step 3: 1. In terms of transportation my home city of St. John’s, Canada would not rank very well. For North American standards it is a very old city with very chaotic roads in the older areas. The public transportation in the city is also very poor and could be improved greatly, but this is a challenge as the city is not that large and is fairly spread out. 2. In terms of medical care St. John’s would rank fairly well. For a city of it’s size it has good medical facilities. Some speciality treatments require patients to go to another hospital in Canada though. Also, with Canada’s universal health care nobody is too poor to afford health care. 3. Traditionally the city of St. John’s would have ranked very poorly in terms of its environmental impacts. The household sewage used to be pumped directly into the harbour without treatment and the landfill site for the municipal solid waste was quite poorly designed. But in recent years a sewage treatment plant was built and the landfill was redesigned and now is much more environmentally friendly. Still, with a very weak public transportation system most people drive everywhere and this has significant environmental impacts through the release of carbon dioxide. 4. St. John’s has a fair amount of parks and green space areas. As the city expands this trend should continue and open spaces for recreation should be included in future developments. 5. The economy of St. John’s is highly dependant on the oil and gas industry, which is currently in a slump. This does not make for a liveable city because it is hard to find meaningful employment right now. In the future the city and province should work to diversify the economy so that that it is not so heavily reliant on one industry. This way a shock to a single industry will not have such a large affect.
