1. Check the temperature differences in US cities DONE 2. Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area? I am not aware of any completed research with respect to the UHI effect in Dubai. However, there is research from MIT and Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi according to which the UHI effect in Abu Dhabi is responsible for up to 15% of cooling requirements in Abu Dhabi (http://global.mit.edu/map/profiles/supporting-cooler-more-sustainable-abu-dhabi). Since Dubai and Abu Dhabi have a very similar climate, this might be a reasonable estimate for Dubai as well. Furthermore, there is research saying that Dubai's surface temperature increased by 1.5 degrees celsius. This might also be an indication for the effect of the UHI (http://www.ecomena.org/tag/urban-heat-island/). 3. Which are the measures you would propose? - Increasing the amount of green spaces in the city - Decreasing the width of corridors between houses - Putting air conditioning units on top of buildings instead of backlanes - Vehicles powered with electricity instead of gasoline 4. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area? I am not aware of any policies in Dubai that would aim to reduce the UHI effect. Since, there is little research on UHI in Dubai, there is also little awareness among the public or among policy makers.
