3 major stocks and flows: - water - energy - people Description: - Drinking water is produced in desalination plants in the hinterland and flows to the city through trucks and pipelines. Water is stored as drinking water in bottles in stores and in reservoirs. It is used and turned into wastewater, which is then treated and flows back into the sea. - Energy arrives in Dubai either as electrical current through the national grid or as gasoline through pipelines and trucks. It is converted into work and heat in the city and while the heat (and some of the work) dissipates a large share of the energy converted into work will be stored in the energy, for example in the form of processed materials or constructed buildings. - People arrive in Dubai by plane or by car from neighboring cities. As of November 2016 the stock of the population in the city was around 2.7m people. People leaving Dubai typically use the same modes of transportation (planes and cars). Changes in the future: - Maybe in the future we will have technologies that replace desalination as the main form of converting salt water to drinking water. Also the use of grey-water reuse systems can significantly affect the water flows in a city. In these systems grey-water (e.g. from the shower or from the sink) is used for other tasks in the household (e.g. for flushing the toilet). This can greatly decrease total consumption of drinking water. - Energy stocks and flows will be significantly affected by new sources of energy. Energy will mostly be arriving as electricity through the national grid from solar- and wind-powered power plants in the hinterland. In addition, cars will be mostly powered by electricity and the flow of energy through pipelines or through trucks will be decreasing massively. - People will continue to arrive in and leave Dubai by cars and planes. However, the construction of a railway will add another mode of transportation to the city and this will greatly affect the stocks and flows of people in Dubai.
