Three most important stocks are: • Food • Water • Tourists Food: is grown in upcountry regions approximately 50km outside the city. The farmers that grow this food harvest it and it is loaded on to food trucks and brought to the city by road. The food is then delivered to large markets on the periphery of the city. At this point various buyers ranging from small scale buyers (individuals) to large scale buyers (supermarkets) purchase this food. It is then taken to individual homes or restaurants where it is consumed. This leftover food or peels leaves the households as solid waste. Water: is drawn from the country’s largest lake. The water is cleaned and treated at an offshore national water treatment facility. The water is then pumped through pipes to the main water reservoir. From the main water reservoir the water is pumped to secondary reservoirs that are located on top of various hills. From these secondary reservoirs water flows to the tertiary reservoirs at individual household level and thereafter drawn from these tanks for household use. This water leave the households as waste/ grey water Tourists: these visitors into the country mainly arrive by air at the country’s only international airport that is located 60km from the city. The tourists travel by road into the city using either buses, taxi cabs or personal vehicles. Most of the tourists stay in hotels within the Central Business District. Since most of the city’s attractions are outside the city, most of the tourists transition through the city to these upcountry destinations. During their stay the tourists pay in foreign currency which brings foreign exchange to the city. At the end of their stay, the tourists leave the city and head back to the airport. These stocks and flows could change in the future: Improved infrastructure: that would mean food is brought to the city faster, tourists spend less time in traffic jam. New sustainable waste management systems: would mean more water is re-used and less water is released as waste water or that food waste could be transformed into energy such as biogas and this will reduce on household energy demands and volume of waste disposed off. Construction of new tourist attractions: this would mean visitors spend more time in the city as opposed to transitioning through the city
