I would say the biggest cause of UHI effects in the City of Mississauga can be related back to the single family suburban style development that is typical for much of the city. By clear cutting and paving over natural areas and and trees the city has increased its capacity to store heat. Huge open roads, parking lots and big 1 storey warehouses are often seen are definitely contribute to storing heat. However, the City has begun to take action in fighting the effects of UHI by introducing such things as Urban Forestry programs, Green Roof incentives and curbside tree plantings. ![enter image description here][1]A few years ago there was a provincial mandate to create a “Green Belt” around the Greater Toronto Area. This was primarily to protect the Oak Ridges Moraine watershed from pollution caused by run-off. However, this serves a dual purpose in that it limits how the scope and reach of suburban development around the City of Toronto. Attached is a picture from Forks of the Credit Provincial Park in the Green Belt. By contrast, the following picture the massive parking lot that is found a kilometres from my home in the City of Mississauga. It serves what is touted as the biggest Costco in Ontario and an equally enormous Walmart. ![enter image description here][2] 3. Which are the measures you would propose? I would try to suggest legislation or by-laws that would protect the existing urban forest, as well as enhance it by planting more trees along new and existing roads. Furthermore, I would mandatory for all new buildings to have green roofs installed on them and create a program where by existing warehouses/factories can apply for tax credits if they install green roofs or trees on their properties. 4. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area? The City of Mississauga has enacted a few different policies in respect to dealing with the effects of the Urban Heat Island. For instance there are policies regarding urban design, green development and urban forestry.
