- Seattle: UP TO 17.0º Hotter in the city than in nearby rural areas – AVERAGE 4.1º City summers are hotter than in rural areas - Las Vegas: UP TO 24.0º Hotter in the city than in nearby rural areas – AVERAGE 7.3º City summers are hotter than in rural areas - Miami: 17.0º Hotter in the city than in nearby rural areas – AVERAGE 1.7º City summers are hotter than in rural areas. - New York: UP TO 20.0º Hotter in the city than in nearby rural areas – AVERAGE 2.7º City summers are hotter than in rural areas. - Dallas: UP TO 19.0º Hotter in the city than in nearby rural areas – AVERAGE 3.8º City summers are hotter than in rural areas I check these 5 differents cities that have differents locations in the USA and the hotter city is Las Vegas, and I think this is due to the climate and ecosystem that it has. **2. Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area?** Monterrey is located in northwestern Mexico. It is a city whose origin is industrial, in the past this town's economy was based on the metal industry. Currently Monterrey is still known as an industrial city and there are many factories that produce things for other companies, but also in the real estate aspect Monterrey has grown too much that urban sprawl is out of control. This city is dominated by the large and big avenues and the pedestrian life is very difficult to overcome in many areas of urban sprawl. But still it prevails the green areas and the city is surrounded by mountains. The urban sprawl is formed by different municipalities (Monterrey, Guadalupe, San Pedro, Santa Catarina, Escobedo, San Nicolas Garcia, Apodaca) In most of these municipalities industries stand out as Santa Catarina, Escobedo, San Nicolas, Apodaca, García, in other municipalities stand other services. This city suffers from many weather events in one day, cold, heat, rain, hail, wind, etc. Has extreme temperatures in the summer, it can reach 48º Celsius but the thermal sensation can be 50 ° Celsius. It is also important to note that this city is surrounded by mountains, Mexico (Sierra Madre Oriental Sierra de las Mitras, Sierra de la Silla) and is crossed by a large river (Rio Santa Catarina) ![Urban Spraw][1] ![General view][2] ![Climate][3] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14453557947486638.png [2]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14453558233277467.jpg [3]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14453559394085076.png **3. Which are the measures you would propose?** As the urban sprawl continues to spread, the first thing I would suggest would be the vertical housing, the city can no longer continue to grow horizontally, this would imply to keep building roads, and the constant use of the car. The other measure would be the use and improvement of public transport, in the past five years Monterrey has tripled the number of personal cars. The creation of green spaces this would help both, the heat island effect, and the improving quality of life of people. Today real estate is destroying mountains to build houses in places where they shouldn’t be, this means that the infrastructure must get to places where it should not be and the destruction of the flora and fauna of the city. And the last suggestion would be gentrification and the regeneration of urban centers in the different municipalities, these have great potential but they are in total abandonment. **4. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area?** I don’t know any policy as such but they are several organizations that help to combat this effect indirectly, "Extreme Reforestation" is one of them, they are dedicated to reforestation throughout the city with help from the community and generate more green spaces, there has also been movement in terms of gentrification on abandoned urban centers of the municipalities. They have also tried to implement bike paths in some municipalities but it has not been very successful And also there is a federal government organization called SEMARNAT (Secretaria de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales) which is responsible for promoting the protection, restoration and conservation of ecosystems and natural resources and environmental goods and services across the country, in the most important points are: - The conservation and sustainable use of ecosystems and biodiversity - The prevention and control of pollution - The integrated management of water resources - The fight against climate change.
