Image of Belo Horizonte: ![enter image description here][1] The same doesn’t happen on Belo Horizonte’s surroundings. As I said, the wind is a very present factor here, and once we cross the mountains that crown the city heading southeast, we face a sharp relief area with many trees where the temperature decreases severely. There, we find some gated communities and a small village called Macacos, 13 km away from Belo Horizonte. There, the temperature is significantly lower than the capital’s. Recently, Belo Horizonte has it’s hotter day ever since temperature started to be measured here. On the same day, Macacos had a nice cold night, with people using blankets. I know because a friend of mine lives there. The city is most a touristic place to spend the weekend, with wonderful waterfalls. Image of Macacos given from a local website: ![enter image description here][2] I particularly don’t see any measure been taken to reduce the UHI effect in here. If I could take part in the decision making process of an initiative related to the UHI effect, I would probably change building regulation laws to enforce the need of bigger permeable areas in each site and public areas. I would create incentives for tree planting and set a limit of reflective materials that buildings could use on their facades. In addition, I could also enforce the need of bigger windows (the current law already asks for a minimum area in each room for windows, but I think it is not enough) in order to reduce the need for the air conditioner.
