There ist data about urban heat islands in Leipzig, ever since it was well studied by local scientists. There is an paper about their research results. You can find an abstract here: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1470160X12000167 There also is a report by the city which conducts a map, showing Heat Islands (B, C and D as heat islands, E, F and G as weak heat islands). The map is based on data collected by airplane and can only show canopy-layer heat islands. Thats why all the parks and the forest appear as heat islands. You can see the map here: http://cdn.leipzig.de/fileadmin/mediendatenbank/leipzig-de/Stadt/02.3_Dez3_Umwelt_Ordnung_Sport/36_Amt_fuer_Umweltschutz/Energie_und_Klima/Stadtklima/klassifizierte_thermalkarte.pdf ![enter image description here][1] ![enter image description here][2] On the two pictures there are diffrent parts of Leipzig. The first picture shows Knauthain which is in the rural surroundings of Leipzig. According to the map it is a cold area. Therefor there are diffrent reasons. First of all Knauthain has a detached and semi detached building structure, which allows the wind to cool down the area. Secondly there are many trees. Third of all the lakes water evaporates, which cools down the air as well. At last the surrounding agricultural areas cool down very well at night. The second picture shows a typical street in Leipzig, which is an UHI according to the map. This i plaubsible, because the streets material saves heat. Additionally building are standing relativly wide, so a lot sun energy reaches the ground to warm it up. The trees may reduce this effect. **Exercise 3** I would propose the following measures: - crearting Parks and forests and saving those that still exist, because they provide cool air - support greencourtyards and green roofs all over the city - include wind directions in future planings - avoid building wide streets Exercise 4: There are no available plans.
