Photograph of building over train tracks in Cambridge, MA, USA. These tracks are not used often, but the city has kept them for certain legacy reasons... we rely on commuter rail to move people in and out of city, but we never completed necessary infrastructure linking the two main Boston train stations. These tracks are only used occasionally to transfer trains between those stations, along with a few occasional freight deliveries. The tracks occupy a lot of land that could be used for economic production, in this case high-value, knowledge intensive R&D. This has impacted building design by forcing particular forms that fly over the tracks, such as this MIT research building. As the needs of city change, the infrastructure will begin to adapt; there are already plans for a bike track to follow the train and link up several neighborhoods. And the track may host shorter diesel trains that serve local trips, not just regional ones. [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14356991136248769.jpg
