This picture was taken last weekend on the "Day of the open construction site" of the new Town Palace right in the centre of Berlin. The former residence of the German emperor was destroyed in World War Two, and is now being rebuilt to serve as a venue for various events, as a museum, and for university purposes. While the core structure is built in a very rational steel-concrete manner without any decorations, it is eventually supposed to look somewhat like the 18th century original. To this purpose, a large number of masons and other artisans are currently preparing elements of the facade, like the capital of a column on the truck in the picture. For these tasks, care was taken to source most of the facade from local artisans working with local materials. Thus, interestingly, while the core parts of the building, mostly steel and concrete, come from far away places, this also shows that many stakeholders also want to have a specifically local feeling to their buildings, despite their apparent and necessary reliance on globally sourced materials. ![enter image description here][1] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14343733006298288.jpg
