Steel, concrete, bricks and wood can all be sourced in this country and local materials were used for the majority of the house. These stairs however are made from durian trees felled in Malaysia, my dad's homeland. I believe this is a good representation of a globalised economy. Even though wood in itself is a sustainable product, if it is imported it has a much greater impact then it would consume. Before the globalised economy the ability to get such a product would be too expensive for a residential build. A local material would have to be used. This would have been more sustainable.
