Description and info below. ![Palace of Culture and Science, Warsaw, Poland][1] The building was conceived as a "gift from the Soviet people to the Polish nation", and was completed in 1955. The structure was built in three years according to the design of the Soviet architect Lev Rudnev. ([more info on Wikipedia][2]) As a gift from 'Soviet people to Polish nation', it was thought and planned to be be build from the materials imported directly to Poland from the soviet countries - Facade cladding (quartz alloys) was produced in the factory in the Ural Mountains (ca. 3000 km away) - the workers were 'imported' as well - 3.5-5.0 thousands Russians) (according to the agreement from 1952) ([based on palace's official history][3]) - black marble floor coverings came from the territory of Ukraine - Steel for the foundation construction comes partially from the former Nazi battleship Gneisenau. [Wikipedia Gneisenau][4] - only the materials which will be not more expensive as the transport costs should have been bought locally (brick, gypsum, stone, and so forth...) The photo in this post was taken by me from my office in Warsaw, where I work as an architect.
