The building in the foreground of the photo is a traditional Swiss house built several centuries ago with local building materials in the traditional style with large eaves to deal with the snow in winter, small windows to avoid heat loss and colourful painting. The buildings behind it are modern in design and use imported materials to achieve this look. Given the amount of glass in the buildings, I imagine that they use modern methods and further imported materials to achieve the necessary heating in winter and cooling in summer. Additionally, with the high cost of living in Switzerland, it is probable that materials and perhaps even labour were imported to build the modern buildings as it would be cheaper. Although the traditional building is much more attractive to look at and probably has a much lower footprint to build and maintain than the modern buildings, the modern ones are probably more pleasant to live in, in terms of light, space, infrastructure and maintainability. However, it would be interesting to know which will still be there in another 100 years time. ![enter image description here][1] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14336793694721979.jpeg
