[1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14305638866588316.jpg Qatar is a small emirate in the east of the arabian peninsula. The country itself has, besides oil and gas, almost no resources. Until only about 40 years ago, it was composed of tribes of Bedouins that traveled all around the country. They lived off their farms, fishing, and pearl diving. Their houses were made of simple, disassemblable local materials. After the recent building boom in Qatar, western style buildings, especially high rises, have become standard. Inspite of the establishment of local building material companies (e.g. Qatar alpha Beton), the country still imports most of its materials and building techniques. The picture shows a site in the desert out of Doha where a uniformed IKEA store is about to be built. The structure constists mainly of steel-inforced concrete and the plans are only minimally adapted to local conditions. In the end, an IKEA store as it could stand in any other country in the world, will be found at the site.
