The image correspond to a construction site in Barcelona where the facade has to be maintained due to city’s regulations. Here, it is interesting to analyze how two materials with different origins are combined for achieving a common goal. While the facade is made of clay bricks, a traditional material in Catalan architecture, the modern scaffold structure is made out of aluminum. Contrary to clay which is locally found and processed, aluminum is mostly found in Australia, China, Africa and South America. Then, raw aluminum material is processed in local industries that require high-tech machinery. Machinery that equally come from different origins. As a result, it is curious to see how a secondary system with multiple origins is employed for guarantying the stability of an old structure made out of local material.
