For non-local professionals it is quite a shock when they realise that this small city-state produces its complete building stock almost 99% from non-local resources. Raw materials such as sand and gravel are being imported from adjacent countries, as well as re-bars, cement, tiles and so on. In the more extreme scenarios, developers import marble from Italy or Greece in an effort to create an artificial surplus value and inflate the already sky-high prices of the the minute condo-flats. On top of material resources, human resources are also widely imported. From technicians or workers from adjacent poorer economies which have an abundance of cheap working power, up to expat-experts from the Western world; a wide range of people are being employed in the local construction industry. It is not an exaggeration to say that Singapore is the epitome of the globalised construction industry.
